పొంగల్ — తమిళనాడు యొక్క సాంప్రదాయ పంట కోత పండుగ — తై మాసంలో నాలుగు రోజులు కొనియాడబడుతుంది. మొదటి రోజు భోగి — పాత వస్తువులను తగలబెట్టి క్రొత్తదానికి స్వాగతం. రెండవ రోజు తైపొంగల్ — మట్టి కుండలో పాలు పొంగించి సూర్యభగవానికి నివేదించటం. మూడవ రోజు మాట్టు పొంగల్ — పశుసంపదకు పూజ. నాల్గవ రోజు కాణుం పొంగల్ — కుటుంబ సమాగమ దినం. మకర సంక్రాంతి యొక్క దక్షిణ భారత స్వరూపం.

Pongal — పురాణ కథ

According to tradition, Pongal marks the end of the winter solstice and the Sun's northward journey (Uttarayana). The festival is linked to the legend of Lord Shiva sending his bull Nandi to earth with the message to bathe and eat once a month; Nandi mistakenly said daily, leading to the need for abundant harvest.

Pongal — పూజా విధానం

  1. At dawn, draw Kolam (rangoli) at the entrance with rice flour.
  2. Boil milk and rice in a clay pot (Pongal) at sunrise until it overflows—symbol of prosperity.
  3. Offer the Pongal to the Sun God along with sugarcane, turmeric, and flowers.
  4. Worship cattle (Maattu Pongal on the second day); visit temples and exchange greetings.
