Hera Panchami Significance & Spiritual Meaning
Observed on Ashadha Shukla Panchami, three days after the Puri Rath Yatra. Goddess Mahalakshmi travels to the Gundicha Temple in search of Lord Jagannath, who has gone to His aunt's house without informing Her — a beloved leela enacted with the Hera Panchami procession from the main Jagannath Temple to Gundicha.
Hera Panchami Mythology & Legend
When Lord Jagannath set out on the Rath Yatra to visit His aunt at Gundicha, He did not inform His consort Goddess Mahalakshmi. After three days of separation, the goddess grows displeased and decides to seek Him out. On Hera Panchami ("hera" means "to search" in Odia), Her vimana (palanquin) is taken in procession from the main Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple. There, in a symbolic confrontation, Her sevayats ritually break a wooden piece of Jagannath's Nandighosha chariot — a symbolic damaging of His vehicle in protest. The goddess then returns to the main temple alone, sulking. Jagannath only returns on Bahuda Yatra (Day 10) and finally re-enters the sanctum on Niladri Bije (Day 13).
